Chocolate Frosting Taste Test

Chocolate Frosting Taste Test

I recently read an article where a group of people sampled and ranked a bunch of store-bought chocolate frostings and thought it sounded like a delicious endeavor, so here we are. I wasn’t about to buy the entire frosting aisle because I only have four family members to taste these with me, so we settled on three. Also I can’t find that article now, sorry.

We tried their top two favorites (1) Betty Crocker Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Frosting, and (2) Pillsbury Creamy Supreme Milk Chocolate Frosting, and a homemade frosting recipe by (3) Sally’s Baking Addiction.

The Aldi brand Baker’s Corner Chocolate Frosting was their third favorite, but I went to Aldi twice and they were out both times, hence the homemade option.

I got caught up in the heavenly chocolate aroma, and forgot to take any pictures of the frostings, so I stole them from the Walmart and Aldi websites, thanks guys!

Walmart was out of my favorite boxed chocolate cake mix, Duncan Hines Duncan Hines Perfectly Moist Devil’s Food Cake Mix Moist Devil’s Food, so I got this Betty Crocker Delights Super Moist Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix Delights Super Moist Triple Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix to try and as promised on the box, it was a delight.

I baked a pan of mini cupcakes for the taste test, because three standard size cupcakes each sounded like a lot, and then the rest of the batter in a standard cupcake pan for later consumption, yano like an hour later.

Homemade frosting is in a completely different universe from store-bought, so that wasn’t really part of the ranking, just a fun extra because I really wanted to taste three. Two just didn’t seem like a taste test. The homemade frosting was delicious, and I would totally use this recipe again. I love Sally’s Baking Recipes, and this was no exception.

The two store-bought frostings were very similar, but the Pillsbury won over all of our taste buds with its extra smooth texture, and perfectly chocolaty without being over the top taste. I would 1000% buy this as my go to store-bought chocolate frosting. It’s what I used on the other cupcakes I ate after our taste test was over.

This was a really fun and delicious dessert activity for a family dinner night and I highly recommend trying something like this. I might have to try other flavors of frosting or cake. What flavors would you like to try? Let us know in the comments.
